Dental Tips to Keep Your Smile Healthy and Bright in the New Year

Healthy SmilesWhether it’s a New Year’s resolution or a promise to your dentist, caring for your smile is a worthwhile goal for 2018.

In addition to prevent tooth decay and gum disease, a healthy mouth supports a healthy body, with studies showing a strong connection between dental health and your overall health.

2018 New Year Resolutions for a Healthy Smile

1. Better Brushing

Most ‘daily’ brushing habits are limited to a rushed scrub in the morning and a quick brushing just before bed. Done correctly, brushing at least twice a day protects your smile from decay in between dental visits and is your best defense against gum disease and cavities.

2. Less Stress

Anxiety and stress are major contributors to subconscious teeth grinding, a condition known as bruxism. Constant clenching leads to extensive wear on your teeth, jaw pain, and migraines. To relieve symptoms of bruxism, your dentist may suggest focused facial massages, proper rest and hydration or a mouth guard to prevent damage.

3. Healthier Habits

What you eat impacts your smile in a big way. Nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables are not only better for you than sugary, carb-rich foods, some of them can even help whiten your smile. To minimize the amount of time your teeth are exposed to harmful acid and bacteria, try limiting your sugar intake to just meal times.

4. More Flossing

Even if you spring for the latest and greatest in toothbrush technology, you still need to floss. Flossing removes food particles and plaque buildup that can’t be brushed away. Be sure to set aside 1-2 minutes each day for flossing.

Proper dental routines and regular checkups are powerful tools to help you avoid future dental problems. With regular preventive care, our patients maintain fabulous smiles for life.
